Our Story

The German Christmas Market of NJ began as a  humble community tradition, a gathering of friends  and neighbors to celebrate the warmth of the holiday season. Today, that tradition has blossomed into a cherished annual event that proudly supports local Sussex County charities, reinvesting 100% of our proceeds back into the community we call home.

Founding a beloved holiday tradition rooted in community, culture, and giving back.

The Hearts Behind
the Market

Founded in 2001 by Gudrun Rank and Karin Meyer, the German Christmas Market of NJ began as a heartfelt vision to share the traditions of their heritage with the Sparta community. What started as a small, volunteer-led effort quickly grew into something much more—an authentic holiday experience rooted in culture, connection, and giving back.

Through their passion and dedication, Gudrun and Karin built more than a market—they created a tradition. One that not only celebrates the spirit of a German Christmas, but also raises vital funds for local Sussex County charities. Since 2013, their vision has been recognized by NJ.com as one of the Top 10 things to do in December, a reflection of the joy and authenticity they brought to life.

As the market continued to grow, their foundation made it possible to expand to the Sussex County Fairgrounds in 2021, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Today, it stands as the largest annual Christmas Market in New Jersey and one of the only German markets in the U.S. dedicated to giving back to its community.

In 2024, Gudrun and Karin’s lasting impact was honored with the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Award—their highest annual recognition—celebrating a legacy of leadership, generosity, and enduring community spirit.

Empowering our Sussex County Neighbors
